The Role of Nutrition in Dementia Prevention and Management

On March 26-27th 2015, the Sackler Institute for Nutrition Science, Nestlé Health Science and the Nestlé Nutrition Institute came together to host a conference at the New York Academy of Sciences on 'The Role of Nutrition in Dementia Prevention and Management'. From prevention to intervention, nutrition may be the most important in the lifestyle and environmental factor that can help prevent the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, and breakthroughs are constantly being made. Examples of this progress are numerous and varied, from a diet specifically designed for brain health to the importance of vitamins B and D relative to the slowing down of cognitive decline and brain shrinkage. Additionally, low brain glucose metabolism is also associated with Alzheimer's. Alternative glucose metabolism therapies are currently being developed to help the brain stay as healthy as possible as well as breakthroughs in discovering the relationship between nutrition, the microbiome and brain health.
